Windows 10: Release date, features, and compatibility
Microsoft has announced that Windows 10, the next version of its operating system, will be available as a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users for one year after its launch. The release date is expected to be sometime in late July or early August.
Windows 10 will introduce a number of new features and improvements, such as:
A unified interface across PCs, tablets, phones, and other devices
A revamped Start menu that combines the classic layout with live tiles
A new web browser called Microsoft Edge that replaces Internet Explorer
A personal assistant called Cortana that can answer questions and perform tasks
A new app store that works across all devices
A new gaming mode that integrates Xbox Live and DirectX 12
A new feature called Continuum that adapts the interface to the device mode (e.g. laptop or tablet)
A new feature called Windows Hello that allows biometric authentication (e.g. face or fingerprint recognition)
Windows 10 will also support a wide range of hardware and software compatibility, including legacy applications and devices. However, some features may require specific hardware or software requirements. For example, Cortana will only work in certain regions and languages, and Windows Hello will require a compatible camera or sensor.
To check if your device is eligible for the free upgrade and if it meets the minimum requirements, you can download and run the Get Windows 10 app from Microsoft.
Google Fi: A new wireless service that could save you money
Google has launched a new wireless service called Google Fi that aims to provide fast, reliable, and affordable mobile connectivity. Google Fi is currently available by invitation only for Nexus 6 owners in the US.
Google Fi works by switching between multiple networks (T-Mobile, Sprint, and Wi-Fi) to find the best signal and speed. It also uses a technology called Network Tools that optimizes the connection quality and security.
Google Fi offers a simple and flexible pricing plan that charges $20 per month for unlimited talk and text, plus $10 per GB of data. The data usage is measured in MBs, so you only pay for what you use. If you use less than your plan amount, you get a credit for the next month. If you use more than your plan amount, you pay the same rate for the extra data.
Google Fi also includes some international benefits, such as free texting in over 120 countries, low-cost calls in over 120 countries, and high-speed data in over 20 countries at no extra charge.
To request an invitation to join Google Fi, you can visit fi.google.com and enter your email address.
